Welcome to the Paisley Hillwalking Club News page.

NEW on the Site:

Hillphones 2010 - Now that we have just slipped into red deer stalking season, please take a look at the new Hillphone website, which replaces the previous booklets. Info in Topical Issues below.

Ever experienced a cloud inversion, or waved your arms about at your very own brocken spectre?
Check out Duncan's article on this
new page to find out more about these hill phenomena.

If you're thinking of joining a forthcoming bus trip to Glencoe to do the infamous Aonach Eagach (September) then you should read the second article A Ridge Too Far? - one club member's take on his first time along the ridge.

Sunday Walk Report

We decided to do the Ballahullish munros as most wanted to bag these two. First time I've ascended from the scrambly north east ridge. Great weather, but misty on summit of Sgorr Dhonuill. Everyone did the two munros except Dave and Jimmy who did a low level walk, and Andy did two Grahams. Had drink in pub in the village. Left about six. To see photos of this walk and others this year go to : jimkettings.weebly.com

The next walk is Meall Corranaich, and Meall a'Choire Leith, on 8 August .
Book your place now by contacting the Bus Convenor for this walk, Brenda Lawson, on  01294 276351 or at busbookings@paisleyhillwalkingclub.org.uk

Weekend Meet Report

On the recent weekend meet to Jura club members clocked up an amazing 83 mountain-bike kilometres apiece, most over extremely rough and hilly terrain. The farm accommodation was a little up-market for a club trip: "we had peacocks in the garden darling!" In perfect zero-midge weather, the group of 8 struggled along what is optimistically shown on the map as a vehicle track, to Corryvreckan at the very tip of the island to view the infamous whirlpool. Timing not quite right for a good show, but the sheer force of the flow through the narrow sound was worth a visit. Sunday saw some mad women taking a plunge in the sea, while 2 of the party added 20 hilly miles to the tally, having to retrieve their house keys left behind at the farm. Doh! Great trip - the passenger ferry from Tayvullich to be recommended.

Next club weekend is 24-26 September to the Scaladale Centre on Harris. Bookings taken from 30 August.

New Hillphone service 2010

This year the service covers 82 Munros and 32 Corbetts. A map of the areas covered and phone numbers are available on www.hillphones.info. Stalking does not usually take place on Sundays or before August, but it is always safest to check. Remember the Scottish Outdoor Access Code says if you are heading to the hills July to October, you should take reasonable steps to find out where deer stalking is taking place and land managers should provide information to allow you to do so. This site allows you to search whether the munro/corbett you wish to climb is covered by a hillphone area; and gives more detailed tips and info on stalking.

The SNH and the Deer Commission for Scotland, along with the National Access Forum, are developing a new Heading for the Scottish Hills site to be launched around 1st August which will take Hillphones a step further. Keep an eye out for it!
